What are the Different Types of Orthodontic Appliances?

Orthodontic treatments are meant to improve your oral health. If you have problems with your smile due to various reasons, orthodontic treatment will help restore it. Orthodontic treatments are applied in various ways that improve your facial structure. It is vital to note that orthodontic appliances are used in administering orthodontic treatment. There are different types of orthodontic appliances. Some of them include:
Transpalatal Bar/Lingual Arch/ Nance
The transpalatal bar/lingual arch/ nance appliances are vital in orthodontics. They are used in lower and upper arches to maintain the shape of a mouth. In most cases, these appliances are placed in patients in transitional dentition. This is when not all adult teeth have erupted. Therefore, these appliances hold space in the arch for permanent teeth to erupt. If the condition isn't appropriate to use the appliance, it will be used in the next phase of orthodontic treatment. The nance or transpalatal bar is a metal bar attached to the other side of your upper molar's bands. They are form-fitted along the roof of your mouth and sometimes contain acrylic. The transpalatal bar is important in this treatment because it helps maintain the width of your dental arch. We commonly use this appliance when a patient has a permanent impacted tooth.
Biteplane
This is another essential orthodontic appliance. It is used to reduce the deep overbite whereby the upper front teeth overlap the lower ones inappropriately. This appliance works by preventing the patient from biting down to the back of their teeth. As a result, it allows you to emerge naturally, reducing your teeth overlap. This appliance is made of acrylic and wire, which can be cemented or removed by an orthodontist. The removable Biteplane is recommended for patients with under-bites.
