How Often Should I See An Orthodontist While On Treatment?

How Often Should I See An Orthodontist While On Treatment?Every orthodontic treatment is customized to the patient's unique needs. People's smiles are different and so are their treatment needs. Your experiences with traditional braces, Invisalign or clear aligners, and other orthodontic devices need to be tailored to you specifically.

Orthodontic treatment may last a few months to a couple of years. But the average duration of the treatment is somewhere from 12 to 36 months. All orthodontic treatments start with an initial consultation. The dentist records X-rays and pictures of the mouth and teeth, including the contours of the gums. A detailed teeth straightening plan is then devised, including cost, time, and appointment schedules.

How Often to See your Orthodontist

If you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, you need to visit the dentist regularly. There are various things that influence how often to get to the orthodontist. The type of orthodontic treatment, your age, the severity of the misalignment, and your commitment to following the orthodontist's instructions, are some of the things that determine how frequently you have to visit the dental specialist.

If you are receiving traditional braces, you will need to subsequently have appointments occurring between four and eight weeks from the previous visit. These appointments usually take about 15 to 20 minutes and involve checking the restorations to see that they adhere to the teeth properly. Traditional braces feature many adjustment components such as wires, metal brackets, and elastics or rubber bands. A dentist has to adjust these components to maintain progress. Replacement of wires or elastics may also be done.

For Invisalign or clear aligners, they involve clear plastic trays that patients wear to improve alignment. You may require fewer visits to an orthodontist if you wear Invisalign. The initial consultation evaluates your teeth and develops the treatment plan from the impressions and digital scans obtained in the dental office. You then come later to pick the aligners. Thereafter, you need to see an orthodontist about four to six weeks after the previous visit. Find out more about orthodontic treatment by visiting our dental office.
