What Should I Know Before Getting Braces?

Posted on 3/20/2023 by Rendon Orthodontics
What Should I Know Before Getting Braces?Have you been told you or a family member will need to get braces? If you have, you may have a lot of questions. Keep reading to get answers to the most common questions about braces before you jump into orthodontic treatment.

There are different types of braces.

First, there are traditional braces, which are made of metal. First, metal brackets are attached to your teeth with dental cement. Wires connect the brackets together. The dentist will adjust the wires over time to space your teeth out properly. You may also be able to opt for ceramic braces, which are lighter, but work in much the same way. Some adults can get lingual braces, which fit behind their teeth, so they are less noticeable.

Know before you get braces that there are foods you can't eat.

As long as you have braces, you'll need to avoid certain foods. For example, you need to avoid any sticky foods, such as caramel, and any hard-to-chew foods, such as apples. You can cut apples and other foods into bite-sized pieces for easier chewing.

You will need to clean your braces thoroughly after each meal.

You should carry a toothbrush and flossers with you so that you can keep your braces as clean as possible. The cleaner you keep your braces, the better your teeth will look when you get your braces off.

You will have some discomfort at the beginning.

Once you get your braces on and get used to them, you should not experience discomfort. When you first get your braces on, be sure and eat soft foods for the first few days. You can also take over-the-counter pain medication to help with your discomfort. While there are some things you'll need to focus on during the time you wear braces, your reward is beautifully spaced, straight teeth, and a perfect bite.
