Things To Know Before You Get Braces

The sight of seeing your beautiful straight teeth is irresistible. The straight smiles and the confidence when you smile are adorable. As such, aligned bites and the associated oral health benefits are the joy of every individual who receives teeth straightening treatment. Apart from gaining the smile you wish, braces rectify misaligned bites and foster good oral hygiene.
The process, of course, will trigger new experiences and feelings as it involves the insertion of foreign objects in your mouth. Therefore, before actually deciding to have braces on, it's good to be familiar with what to expect depending on what you are treating, be it overcrowded teeth, crooked or misaligned teeth, or spacing issues.
Some Pain and Discomfort
Expect some slight pain, especially during the initial steps. Your mouth is not used to foreign objects, therefore, you might feel some irritation and pain when the braces are first placed and when they are tightened during later visits to the dentist. The pain is, however, mostly mild and usually fades away in a few days. However, if the discomfort is severe you can seek advice from a dental specialist.
Change in Diet
Due to the way braces are placed and tightened on the teeth, you may have to adjust to changes in your diet. In the first days, or after a tightening visit to the dentist, hard foods that require biting may be difficult to consume. As such, smoothies can be nice substitutes. Alternatively, cut food into small pieces so that they are easily chewed without the need to bite into them.
Difficulty in Cleaning the Teeth
Brushing and flossing the teeth may be a bit strenuous after having braces on. The spaces between the teeth become very narrow, making them difficult to reach during cleaning. It is also hard to clean in between the wires and teeth surface. That being said, however difficult it seems, good dental hygiene is also essential for a speedy recovery, and it also lessens the period taken to wear braces.
