How gum disease can affect your facial shape

Posted on 7/10/2023 by Rendon Orthodontics
How gum disease can affect your facial shapeBeauty is what we see externally. The clothes, the shoes, and also the looks on a person's face. Now, all these are not permanent. Your clothes are going to tear, and your shoes are going to wear out. Your face on the other hand is prone to deformation, either through an accident or due to reasons like gum disease. Today, we are going to discuss how gum disease can affect your facial shape.

What role do gums play on your face

Your gums are responsible for the nourished foundation of your healthy tooth roots. This is their main function, however, they are also responsible for maintaining an aesthetic look on your face. They also are a protective barrier between the bacteria found in the mouth and the bloodstream. This bacterium can cause health issues like inflammation.

How does gum disease affect your facial shape

Now, when the gums are affected by gum disease, they may lose the ability to perform the above functions well and this might lead to complex issues if untreated. Gum disease can affect the bite relationship and this in turn decreases the angle at the corner of the lips. Often, patients may lose as much as 25% of their jawbone ridge due to tooth loss. In turn, this causes facial deformations on the victim. In advanced cases, the attachments on the lower jaw muscles are also affected making the tissue sag leading to 'witch's chin' or what is often referred to as jowls. It is important to keep your gums healthy.

Our role is to make sure that this is done and any other dental service during the visits. Our team is responsible for screening the signs and offering a range of specialist advice according to your needs. They take the time to provide dental care and hygiene services, not forgetting to offer solutions to reduce the effects and keep your gums stable.
