How Long Must Retainers Be Worn?

Posted on 9/11/2023 by Rendon Orthodontics
How Long Must Retainers Be Worn?A dental retainer is a personalized appliance designed to maintain the new positions of your teeth after completing orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign or braces. Once you finish with Invisalign or braces, your orthodontist will create custom retainers for you, marking the beginning of the retention phase. This phase is crucial in ensuring that your teeth remain in their corrected positions and that the results of your treatment are preserved over time. Retainers are typically worn for a specified period, as our orthodontist recommends stabilizing your teeth to prevent any unwanted shifting. Regular use of retainers during the retention phase is essential for long-term success and maintaining the outcome of your orthodontic treatment.

How Long Do I Have To Wear Retainers

During the initial months after Invisalign or braces treatment, it is common for patients to wear their retainers full-time. This period allows the tissues and bone to rebuild and secure the teeth in their new positions. Similar to Invisalign aligners, retainers are removed for specific activities. These include drinking (except plain water), eating, flossing, and brushing teeth. You must also remove your retainers when wearing a mouthguard during sports activities. It is essential to follow these guidelines to ensure the effectiveness of the retention phase and maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment.

After a few months of wearing retainers full-time, your teeth will become more stable, reducing the risk of relapse. At this stage, you will transition to wearing your retainers only at night. The duration of wearing retainers every night can vary depending on individual needs, but it typically lasts at least as long as the duration of your Invisalign or braces treatment. Our orthodontist will provide specific instructions on how often and when to wear your retainers during this phase to achieve the best outcomes.
